DESSERT WINES
DE0326Q Dr. Loosen Riesling Beerenauslese 2006, Mosel, Germany 18.75cl £9.99
The 2006 vintage produced normally rare botrytised grapes in abundance. So Ernie Loosen decided to include the grapes from all his best vineyards in a generic Beerenauslese, releasing it in quarter bottles at a price equivalent to a third that of the 2005s. ‘This is a sweet, plump wine, filled to the brim with lush tropical fruit flavours. The aromas show remarkably pure pear and pineapple scents, with just a touch of dried apricots but also a sense of slate-driven minerality. 93 pts’ Wine Enthusiast Magazine To 2012
AU1046H Tamar Ridge Botrytis Riesling 2006, Tasmania, Australia 37.5cl £11.99
Vibrant floral aromas with hints of apricots and tropical fruits. Luscious fruit flavours with apricot, pineapple and some hints of lime. Great mouthfeel with lovely viscosity and length of flavour, all kept in balance by crisp, fresh acidity that prevents the wine from being cloyingly sweet. To 2013+
FR1640H Baumard Quarts de Chaume 2000, Coteaux du Layon, France 37.5cl Ø £16.95
Quarts de Chaume is an outstanding Grand Cru appellation that produces rich, powerful dessert wines from nobly-rotted Chenin Blanc. ‘The lovely flavours of quince, fig, mineral and orange blossom build in intensity on the palate, while the juicy texture develops grip on the back end… another excellent vintage for this overlooked dessert wine. 93 pts' Wine Spectator. To 2015 Other vintages are available
DE0073H Langguth Waldracher Laurentiusberg Riesling Eiswein 2003, Germany 37.5cl Ø £17.99
Hand harvested in winter, the frozen Riesling grapes are gently pressed to produce an astonishingly rich, concentrated wine with naturally high sugar and acidity. Amazing aromas of peach, apricot and caramel with layers of unctuous fruit flavours in an extremely full-bodied format. Drink now or keep 2013+
FR2415W Domaine des Baumard 'Cuvee le Paon' 2005, Coteaux du Layon, France £23.95
The best Coteaux du Layon you can buy: 'Really enticing, with quince, pear, persimmon and fig aromas and flavours, but it’s never heavy, just pure and refined with a lovely, caressing finish. The acidity is really buried here - should cruise in the cellar. 95 points' James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator To 2027
FORTIFIED WINES
PO0020F Delaforce 'His Eminence's Choice' 10 Year Old Tawny Port, Portugal £16.99
Delaforce are noted for their tawny Ports and this 10 year old is a great example. 'Very aromatic and enticing. This is very rich, with toffee and caramel aromas and a fruity undertone. Full-bodied and very sweet, with an almond, candied fruit and light fruitcake aftertaste. 89 pts. (JS) Wine Spectator To 2011
IT1067R Rocca Torricelle 1997, Primitivo di Manduria, Italy £18.95
This unique wine is made from super-ripe Primitivo grapes and though fermented to 15% abv there is still some sweetness. The wine was aged five years in traditional oak vats and then in bottle. Soft prune and plum jam flavours with tangy redcurrant, orange and hints of Christmas pudding. Ripe, juicy and sweet-edged like a lower alcohol Port. Sold at £37 elsewhere, this fascinating wine is well worth trying.
PO0037F Delaforce Quinta da Corte Vintage Port 1987, Portugal £18.99
In years when overall quality does not merit the release of a Delaforce vintage port, the grapes from the Quinta da Corte vineyard are often good enough to merit a limited release on their own. 'Classy and silky in the mouth, showing plenty of elegance and power. Deep purple, with a fresh black olive nose, full-bodied, with medium tannins and balanced tar and blackberry flavours.' Wine Spectator To 2011
PO0060F Dow's 20 Year Old Tawny Port, Portugal Ø £23.95
A blend of complex older wines and fresh, vibrant younger ones to give an average age of 20 years. A big wine with multi-layered palate and spellbinding aromas of vanilla, caramel, orange peel and roasted nuts. Full-bodied and rich rather than sweet with a deliciously long finish. Classic style to enjoy to 2012 |
